History of the Event
If anyone had told Audrey Fey and Diane Trezza that their shared wish to help breast cancer patients would take a giant leap forward, they might have looked surprised.
But that is exactly what happened, when their dream awoke to make “Steps for Survival” an increasingly successful fundraising event benefiting The Leslie Simon Breast Care and Cytodiagnosis Center at Englewood Hospital and Medical Center.
It began quietly in 2005 when Audrey, a medical aesthetician for reconstructive surgeon Richard D’Amico, MD, and Diane, a nursing coordinator for the oncology group of Drs. Forte, Schleider, Attas, Morrison and Condemi, shared ideas about ways they could further support the breast cancer patients they and their colleagues cared for.
“This event has taken on a life of its own,” said Audrey, the event’s founder and original organizer. “That’s because Steps for Survival is so much more than a fundraising event. It’s truly an extended family, joining together the hearts and hands of our patients and their loved ones, our community, our Medical Center staff, and the many people with whom we work who volunteer to make this event the success that it is.”
